Foeniculum vulgare Mill.is a biennial medicinal and aromatic plant belonging to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferaceae).


Fennel is indigenous to the shores of the Mediterranean but has become widely naturalized in many parts of the world, especially on dry soils near the sea-coast and on riverbanks. Fennel seeds are found in the bulbs of fennel plant. It is a highly aromatic and flavourful herb with culinary and medicinal uses.


Fennel seeds are high in the antioxidant group known as flavonoids, phenolic compounds; alkaloid; tannin; saponins; and essential oil. Studies have found that flavonoid are effective combatant of free radical damage to cell in the body, a known cause of many different types of cancer. Flavonoids can also help reduce oxidative stress to the cardiovascular system and protect from neurological disease. Some report claim that chewing fennel seed may help to reduce the symptoms of asthma, clear sinuses and stabilize breathing.
