Mahogany (Swietenia mahogany) is a medium-large size tree up to 20-30 meters in height, with a heavy evergreen crown of leaves.
The reddish brown wood is widely known to be used for furniture. Grown in Indonesia, India, Srilanka, Malaysia, Philippines and Fiji. The fruit of the mahogany (Swietenia mahogany fructus) tree is brown large oblong shape, 10-15 cm long, 7 cm in diameter, as it has a strong stem, they seem to hang upwards facing the sky, therefore they also are called sky fruit in Malaysia. When dry, the fruit will split open, inside five valves contining winged seeds (35-35 seeds per fruit). The seeds are light brown, 1-2 cm long, almond shaped, and have a very bitter taste.
